On April 18, the FBI asked the public for assistance both before and after releasing photographs and videos of two suspects. These were identified that day with help from the public as brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Shortly after the release of the photos, the suspects allegedly killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, and carjacked an SUV.
Police tracked the Tsarnaev brothers to Watertown, Massachusetts, where a “ferocious” shootout involving hundreds of firearms rounds and explosives ensued around 1 a.m. on April 19.
A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police officer was critically injured and Tamerlan Tsarnaev fatally injured, allegedly by his brother driving the car over him while trying to escape. Tamerlan died in a hospital later that day.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, also injured, escaped. An unprecedented manhunt ensued, with thousands of police and military personnel searching in a 20-block area of Watertown.
On April 19, authorities asked residents of Watertown and surrounding areas, including Boston, to stay indoors, and most businesses and public institutions, including transit systems, were shut down.
Around 7 p.m. that evening, Dzhokhar was found hiding in a boat behind a Watertown house, arrested, and taken to a hospital.
On April 22, Dzhokhar was charged in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, and with malicious destruction of property resulting in death, in connection with the attacks.
According to government officials, Dzhokhar indicated during his interrogation that the bombings were motivated by his religious beliefs.

(This documentary is well put together ... but ... the music can be overwhelming and some clips are difficult to hear. Overall, I thought it was well done. ~ SadInAmerica)
